5th Grade - Anatolian Festival - October 6, 2011

Visitors enter the festival area through the “Civilizations Path”, which consists of 14 gates each representing different civilizations like Hittite, Troy, Urartu, Frig, Lydia, Ionia, Kingdom of Commagane, Persians, Byzantium, Roman Empire, Great Seljuk Empire, Ottoman Empire, and Republic of Turkiye. Anatolia has been a cradle for all these and many other civilizations throughout the history. At each gate, actors wearing authentic costumes of each civilization welcome and greet all visitors.
Three dimensional giant-sized replicas of five different cities of Anatolia (Istanbul, Konya, Antalya, Mardin and Van) and the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul are assembled with panoramic backgrounds. Artisans traveling all the way from Turkey display and demonstrate many traditional handicrafts like hand- woven carpets, the arts of water marbling, calligraphy, stone-carving and filigree during the four-day festival.
The replica of the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul houses more than 100 booths with food, handcrafts, souvenirs, and art exhibits. Visitors are able to freshen themselves up with a cup of Turkish coffee or several glasses of tea at another busy spot of the festival area, named after the traditional Ottoman Coffee House. Just like the realGrand Bazaar, visitors can walk through the booths displaying hand-made jewelry, scarves, lucky charms and hand- woven carpet displays accompanied by the Anatolian hospitality.
Visitors are drawn into 99 different kinds of food including kebabs and doner (Gyros), various kinds of desserts including baklava, dumplings, and the world famous tough and sticky Maras’s ice-cream. The Anatolian Cultures and Food Festival is a feast for all of the five senses!

At the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve Visitor Center in Murrieta

In this unique field study program, students will keep nature journals documenting their immersion into the unique and beautiful local natural setting of the Santa Rosa Plateau. This interdisciplinary class will combine science, art, and poetry as we practice the scientific and artistic skills of observation, pattern recognition, problem solving, experimentation, and thinking by analogy in our writing and observational drawing. Students will practice naturalist skills as they learn to identify plants and animals and gain an understanding of the interconnections of species within ecological communities.  We will immerse ourselves in an appreciation of natural surroundings and of poetic language and creative self-expression, and gain insights into the natural history of the Plateau. As artists and writers, students will develop creative expression along with a deep sense of personal connection to the natural resources and setting.

5th Grade - Lincoln Memorial Shrine in Redlands - August 17, 2011

The Lincoln Memorial Shrine was originally designed in an octagon shape by noted Southern California architect Elmer Grey in 1932. The construction of reinforced concrete was faced with Bedford Indiana limestone plates upon which are inscribed excerpts from Lincoln’s speeches.
Although the original plan called for 75 foot long patio wings to extend from each side of the Shrine, complete with fountains, benches, and additional inscriptions, it was not until 1937 that these areas were added. The additions were crafted from the same material used in the octagon with the Indiana limestone selected to match before leaving the quarry. As originally planned, these patio areas featured additional excerpts from Lincoln’s speeches inscribed into the walls and fountains designed by noted American sculptor Merrill Gage. Robert Watchorn had always desired to expand his facility, but the lingering effects of the Great Depression followed by the start of World War II caused him to postpone his plans. In 1944 Watchorn passed away his dreams unfulfilled.
On February 12, 1998, Watchorn’s desire for an enlarged facility was realized when the newly expanded Shrine was rededicated. After four and a half years of fund raising two new wings were added to the original octagon where the patio areas had been located. The design called for moving the fountain and pool areas forward. Careful removal and repositioning of the limestone panels, and the selection of new materials have created a harmonious blend of new wings with original octagon.
The interior of the Shrine features bookcases from Circassian walnut in the original octagon. The woodwork in the new wings was chosen to complement the original furnishings.

We had two docents who led us through the Shrine. They made the field trip educational and fun. If one of them stopped speaking the other kept going. Great tag team.
